Over the years, I have lived in some pretty cold places....Montreal, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, and New England to name a few. Winters in these cities can be really nasty. It starts getting cold almost as soon as Labor Day has passed. By late September you don't even think about leaving the house without a warm coat and mittens on standby in your pockets. Each day gets colder then the next, and it continues into the spring. Its not unheard of to see snow in April. The stupid Ground Hog's prediction really doesn't apply to the northern part of our country, he's often the punch line to many jokes.
I've seen snow plowed so high, that it went several feet above the mailbox. You had to dig a hole to it if you wanted your mail. You could also dig three room igloos into snow drifts. Those were pretty cool! Icicles really can stretch from the rooftop to the ground. Ice crystals can form on eyelashes, and people do put actual chains on their tires to get traction in the snow. But even in the subzero temps, life continued as normal and people went about their normal routines. The most I can ever remember is two consecutive days of school closures and that was more about the temperatures than the weather conditions.
Who would have ever thought that it would take moving to Texas for me to be stranded in my house for four consecutive days! That's right folks, TEXAS! The Dallas / Fort Worth area is basically a giant ice skating rink. You really could put on ice skates and glide around the streets of my neighborhood. Its one of the craziest things I have ever seen. We now have 3 inches of snow on top of the ice and another 3 expected this afternoon. Part of the problem is that this area is just not equipped to deal with these conditions, why should they be??? Two months of cold weather is usually what winter consist of here. One snow fall is considered a really tough winter.
Its too bad that the NHL All-Star game isn't being hosted in Dallas this weekend. Instead, its welcoming the NFL for the Super Bowl. Poor Jerry Jones, who was so wanting to spotlight our city, is most likely pissed off beyond belief at Mother Nature, and hooked to an IV of Prozac to get himself through the next couple of days.
