We woke up yesterday morning to discover that our beloved Beta Fish, Abby, had taken a nose dive to the bottom of her little fish bowl. Abby has been with our family for over 2 years. Emma gave it to her sister as a present on her second birthday. Whenever we talk about "Our Family" both girls always include our dog and the fish in the head count.
So Daddy broke the news to Sara and had to leave for work. Lucky me was left to comfort a sobbing 4 year.....thanks hon! Sara balled for a good 45 minutes in mommy's arms, wimpering inbetween tears about how much she loved Abby and was going to miss her. As a parent how do you explain life, death and heaven to a kid. They really need to offer classes on these matters.
Finally we were calm enough to hold a memorial service. Mommy got Abby in the little fish net and hummed TAPS as the funeral procession of two somber little girls in their PJs followed her into the bathroom. Some kind words were spoken about how much Abby meant to our family and each girl said goodbye. The funneral ended with a big flush and two little girls crying hysterically.
I wondered why yesterday seemed to fly by so quick and now I know where my time was spent. Glad to report that the sadness seems to have lifted and Abby has not been mentioned today. RIP Abby, you are missed.
